Temporary unavailability of the International Certificate of Vaccination

June 19, 2005 12:25 PM EST | Consumer Info | Email to Friend | Comments (0)

The International Certificate of Vaccination (ICV) is on backorder from the Government Printing Office. Certificates are expected to be available by mid-July 2005. As a temporary measure, health-care providers should document vaccination of the traveler on office stationery with letterhead and date, sign and stamp the letter. The letter should also mention that because of unavailability of the certificates, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended this method of documentation until the certificates are available again. There is no guarantee a stamped letter will be accepted by border authorities in all countries requiring proof of vaccination. Because medical waivers written on office stationery and stamped with the official Uniform Stamp Number are accepted for travelers with contraindications to vaccination, a letter documenting vaccination might temporarily be acceptable. The traveler should retain the letter as documentation to present at the time of revaccination.

ICV’s may be purchased from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office for $1.25 ($15.00 per 100) through a toll-free telephone number, fax, or on-line.
