Commerce Secretary Don Evans today issued the Call for Nominations for the 2006 National Medal of Technology awards, the nation’s highest honor awarded by the President to America’s leading technological innovators.

Through the National Medal of Technology, the President recognizes American innovators who have made lasting contributions to advancing our global competitiveness, economic prosperity and quality of life.

“These science and technology pioneers are American heroes,” said Evans. “They are explorers and risk-takers who have pushed the boundaries of science and technology for the benefit of humankind. Their groundbreaking contributions have helped bring useful technologies to market, create jobs, increase U.S. productivity, and stimulate the nation’s economic development.”

Secretary Evans echoed President Bush’s emphasis on educational excellence, government’s role in fostering a strong and vibrant environment in which entrepreneurship can flourish, and the desire to maintain America as the innovation headquarters of the world.

“ National Medal of Technology laureates and today’s young men and women have something in common -- their determination to make the world a better place, to make the next great scientific discovery, to invent life-changing materials, and to carry on America’s great tradition of innovation,” said Evans.

Secretary Evans encouraged this year’s nominators to consider the high-impact contributions which colleagues, mentors or associates have made in areas such as:

Technology Manpower/Workforce Training/Education
Technology Management and Policy
Technology Product and Process
Environmental Technology
