Eight years later, when the Beatles crashed America's shores like a tidal wave, the deal was sealed: the guitar was at once a ticket to possible instant riches and an omnipresent symbol of youthful rebellion.

But this orchestral instrument was not, of course, born in the mid-1950s and raised in the mid-'60s. Long before "the King" and "the Fab Four," there were great guitarists of all kinds, many of whom influenced the rise of rock 'n' roll. From the U.S., South America, and Europe during the last century came a string of masters who also gave the guitar a prominence it has enjoyed for the past four decades.

Seventy-eight of those guitar giants are included in 100 YEARS OF JAZZ GUITAR, a remarkable 4-CD anthology that not only draws upon the extensive catalogues of Columbia and RCA Records and their subsidiaries, but leases material from about 30 other original labels to yield the absolutely definitive jazz guitar collection ever assembled. The set spans the years 1906 to 2001, from the ragtime banjo of Vess Ossman (originally recorded on an Edison cylinder) to the diaphonous chords of Bill Frisell. In between, virtually every major figure of the jazz guitar weighs in, from Eddie Lang, Django Reinhardt, and Charlie Christian to Les Paul, Tal Farlow, and Wes Montgomery, and right up to Jim Hall, Grant Green, George Benson, Pat Martino, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, and John Scofield (one of the producers of this set).

And the package's artistic focus is not strictly limited to pure jazz players, as witness the presence of a variegated group of important improvisers like Hawaiian string kings Roy Smeck and Sol Hoopi, Western Swing aces Leon McAuliffe and Eldon Shamblin, and the brilliant Brazilians, Laurindo Almeida, Joao Gilberto (the godfather of Bossa Nova) and Toninho Horta. One also encounters country-jazz innovator Hank Garland, rock 'n' blues titans Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, and Jeff Beck, progressive rock icon Allan Holdsworth, fusion meisters Larry Carlton, Al DiMeola, and Mike Stern, and avant-garde pace-setters Derek Bailey, Sonny Sharrock, James "Blood" Ulmer, and Marc Ribot.

In addition, the box contains a generous book filled with photographs of each of the principles heard herein, an authoritative overview essay by British guitar scholar Charles Alexander, old guitar ads, photos of the many classic guitar models and amps, solo transcriptions and technical analysis, testimonials from guitar legends, and precise discographical data. Clearly, 100 YEARS OF JAZZ GUITAR is the set to get if one is even remotely interested in the history and development of guitar over the course of the past century. Guitar starts here!

Their debut release How To Save A Life showcases The Fray's style - a sophisticated, emotional blend of tinkling pianos, acoustic and electric guitars, and gently insistent rhythms that serves as an ideal backdrop for lead singer Isaac Slade's pitch-perfect, achingly beautiful vocals.

The album includes the addictive single Over My Head (Cable Car) and the title track, How To Save A Life, a heartbreaking meditation on salvation inspired by Slade's experience as a mentor to a crack-addicted teen. Both songs employ an epic sweep, speeding up and slowing down so effortlessly that the listener can't help but become emotionally involved by the time the crescendo hits.

Highlighted by a guest appearance from Phyllis McGuire of the McGuire Sisters on the medley of 1954 hits, "Teach Me Tonight/Sincerely," The Greatest Songs of the Fifties is a veritable jukebox of favorites - from his remake of the Four Lads' "Moments To Remember" (1955) and the Everly Brothers' "All I have To Do Is Dream," to Bobby Darin's "Beyond The Sea" - but to hear them collected on one album is a dream come true. The album (just like the era it emulates) cuts across musical genres, from The Four Ace's "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" to Frankie Avalon's "Venus," to Johnny Mathis' "It's Not For Me To Say," to Tommy Edwards' "It's All In The Game" and Diniah Washingston's signature "What A Difference A Day Makes." Some of America's greatest artists are evoked on songs that are forever associated with them. For example, Tony Bennett on "Rags To Riches," along with Frank Sinatra's "Young At Heart," and Elvis Presley's "Are You Lonesome Tonight." For Manilow, The Greatest Songs of The Fifties is a true labor of love.

A saxophone is a musical instrument that belongs to the woodwind category. It is one of the youngest musical instruments. Saxophones were generally used in the military and in big orchestras but are now found in smaller bands as well. They are generally used for big band music, pop music and jazz. The saxophone was invented by Adolphe Sax, a Belgian, in the 1840s. Later, many people made their own alterations to the instrument. There are many types of saxophones but the four most commonly used saxophones are: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone saxophones.

The soprano saxophone is the smallest as well as the highest-sounding. It is straight in shape and resembles a clarinet, though curved models, resembling miniature alto saxophones, are also available. Curved models were more popular during the 1930s. The soprano saxophone is a B-flat instrument. It is generally preferred for jazz music, but rarely used for classical compositions.

The soprano saxophone has become very popular these days, especially with jazz, rock and pop music. John Coltrane, a popular jazz saxophonist, was responsible for making the soprano saxophone fashionable in the 1960s. The soprano saxophone is generally considered to be the most difficult to play, compared to alto, tenor and baritone saxophones.

Even in soprano saxophones, there are many models: F mezzo-soprano, soprano, C soprano and sopranino are the smallest saxophones in that order. Soprano in C, and mezzo-soprano in F are very popular models. C sopranos were meant for military bands and vaudeville arrangements. C sopranos are almost similar to B sopranos though they are 2 centimeters shorter than B sopranos.

The local music store, mail-order service, a private party or the Internet are the different sources for buying soprano saxophones. The main aspects to be considered are the quality, service, price and the model. The Internet is a good source to find information about soprano saxophones, but it is wise to test a few of them before buying.

The main aspects to be considered are the quality, service, price and the model. The Internet is a good source to find information about soprano saxophones, but it is wise to test a few of them before buying.

A saxophone is a musical instrument that belongs in the woodwind category. It is one of the youngest musical instruments. The saxophone was invented by Adolphe Sax, a Belgian, in the 1840s. Later, many people made their own alterations to the instrument. Saxophones were generally used in the military and in big orchestras but are now found in smaller bands as well. They are generally used for big band music, pop music and jazz.

The saxophone is similar to a clarinet, in that both use a single mouthpiece. However, it has a square or round evacuated inner chamber. The body is conical in shape, like the oboe, though the curve is more distinctive at the bell. Saxophones may be straight or curved, though straight ones are more common. Though there are many kinds of saxophones, these four are the most common: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone saxophones.

The tenor saxophone is the second most common saxophone, after the alto. It is slightly larger than the alto, with a small bend in the neck. The rods and tone holes are also longer and larger than those of the alto. The longer neck is the main reason for neck damage in a tenor. The tenor is a typical jazz saxophone, although it is also used for classical music.

The main parts in a tenor saxophone are: the mouth-piece, including the ligature and the reed; the main tube that has tone holes and keys; a series of rods that connect the keys to the tone holes; the pads that securely cover the tone holes and, most importantly, the bell.

The local music store, mail-order service, a private party or the Internet are various places where one can buy tenor saxophones. The main aspects to be considered are the quality, service, price and the model. The Internet is a good source of information about tenor saxophones, but it is a good idea to test a few of them before buying.

The more important thing to realize with Golf Solitaire is that Kings and Aces are special. Every other card in the deck can be removed onto cards ranked directly above or below the card. For example, a 5 can be removed onto a 4 or a 6.

But Aces and Kings are different. An Ace can only be removed onto a Two, and a King can only be removed onto a Queen.

This means you have to be particularly careful when you use Queen's and Two's.

Because of this, the very first thing you should do when you start a game of Golf Solitaire is to count all the Kings and Aces. If all the Kings are in the tableau, then every time you remove a Queen, you MUST make sure you also remove a King, or you wont be able to finish the game. And if a Queen is dealt from the Talon, then you MUST remove a King straight away. If you can't, you may as well undo, or start a new game.

Similarly, if all four Aces are in the tableau, then every time you remove a Two, you MUST make sure you also remove a Ace, and if a Two is dealt from the Talon, then you must immediately remove a Ace.

If all the Aces and Kings aren't out, then you need to keep track of how many Two's and Queen's have been dealt from the Talon. In this case you don't need to use every Two or Queen on a Ace or King, but if you keep track and work out that there are not enough Two's or Queens left to remove all the remaining Aces or Kings, then it is time to undo...

Just being aware of this one facet of Golf Solitaire will immediately increase your chances of winning. It takes about 5 seconds to count the Aces and Kings at the start of the game, but it will help to dramatically improve your winning percentage! There are other ways to further increase your chances of winning Golf Solitaire...

If you have a choice between removing two cards of the same rank, one being the last card in it's stack, and the other having cards above it, then make sure you choose the card in the stack with cards above it. Removing the last card in the column will not help you to remove any other cards, but removing the card with cards above it will expose new cards, which will help to form new sequences, and will give you more options later in the game.

You should also look at which cards will be exposed when given a choice between removing cards of equal value. There are two things to look for:

- Is the exposed card an Ace or a King? If so, it might be worthwhile exposing so it can be removed if a Two or a Queen is dealt.

- Does the exposed card help with any other potential sequences at the moment? If so, then it may be worth exposing because it might help make a longer sequence later. eg: If there are a lot of Fours and Sixes exposed at the moment, then exposing a Five might be worthwhile.

Finally, it's often worth planning out sequences, and playing around with alternatives, to see how long a sequence you can make. You will often find that the first sequence you can see in Golf Solitaire is not the best one, and a different sequence might help you to remove a lot more cards. You may find it helps to point your finger at the screen while planning out your sequence. It seems to help the thinking process, and helps you to remember the sequence! If you follow these strategies, will you win every game of Golf Solitaire? No, you won't. There is too much luck involved, and most games will not be finishable.

You will greatly increase your chances of winning Golf Solitaire though, and spend less time trying to finish games which can't possibly be won.

The most important thing is to make sure you book a professional. An amateur or part-time magician maybe able to perform amazing magic but there is a lot more to it than that. Will they turn up on time? Will they be smartly presented? Will they work hard to make sure they see every guest? Will they have the experience to cope with any last minute changes?Remember that if you are hosting or organising an event, the magician you choose will reflect on you. In the same way, a professional magician who's livelihood depends on performing regularly will look after all the small details because it reflects on them and their prospects of getting more work.

How do you know someone is a professional? After all, anyone can say they are but what can you do to check that it's true?

How to Spot a Professional Magician
Check that the magician has a good website and/ or printed promotional materials. These days, magicians often rely on a website to provide information to prospective clients because it is so easy to keep a website up to date. Many also have videos or DVDs and printed materials including photographs. Of course, this doesn't make them a great magician but it does indicate their professionalism. It can also give you an idea of what a performer is like if you haven't met them.

Check that the magician is a member of magic societies such as the Magic Circle and the International Brotherhood of Magicians. These societies require magicians to be serious and accomplished performers before they are allowed membership. Another good sign is if they are a member of an organisation like Equity, the UK performers union or similar professional body.

Check the magician's list of clients and engagements, and testimonial/ recommendation letters. A professional magician should be able to provide details of past clients and engagements - if they can't something is wrong. The types of events they have been involved with will indicate if they are the right magician for your event. The letters and quotes can be helpful, although it is unlikely that any bad quotes will find their way into someone's promotional materials! However, the number and quality of the quotes should give you an idea of how well received a performer is. Don't be afraid to ask for copies of the original letters or emails.

Check that the magician has public liability insurance. This is very important! The magician may be closely interacting with your guests, perhaps borrowing objects from them and a professional will be covered for any accidents that may happen.

Is a Particular Professional Magician Right for You?
So, you've found a professional magician. How do you know they are right for you and your event? Obviously, seeing them perform is the best way. Often a magician will work regularly at a restaurant or club, or even have a regular stage show and this is a great opportunity to see them in action. However, some magicians only perform at corporate and private functions and you may not be able to see them in public.

Promotional materials and information about past clients and engagement should give you a pretty good idea what they are like, but a quick phone call is the best way. Have a chat with them, ask them what their performance style is like and what types of magical effects they perform. If you like what you hear and can get on with them over the phone, it's a good sign.

Price and Negotiating a Fee
Often the main factor when deciding which magician to choose is price. Fees for professional magicians vary a lot because they depend on many factors such as the date and time of the event, how well known the magician is, what type of magic you want them to perform, how long you want them for, etc. But, as with most other services and products, you get what you pay for. Good magical entertainment is not something that you can get cheaply. If you are shopping around and enquiring with many magicians, going with the cheapest may not be the best option! When negotiating the fee it can be a good idea to be up front and state what the available budget is. This could save both you and the magician a lot of time. If one magician is too expensive or is not available, they may be able to suggest another magician or entertainer for your event. Their opinion is worthwhile, since they should be well aware how good other magicians are and suggesting someone unprofessional would reflect badly on them.

Finally, remember to check whether the fee you negotiate is fully inclusive and that there are no hidden extras such as VAT or travelling expenses.

Close-up magic is magical entertainment that happens right in front of you, magic you can not only see but feel and touch. This intimacy is what makes it so different from other types of magic. An expert close-up magician will involve and interact with the audience far more than a stage magician (or any other form of entertainer for that matter).

Most close-up magicians use common props such as playing cards, coins, sponge balls and rope. And all magicians perform the same basic magical effects with these props, making them appear, disappear, change, levitate, break and restore, and penetrate other objects. What is amazing about close-up magic is that it happens so close to you, sometimes while you are holding the props! There are many standard close-up magic effects and standard routines used to present them. For example, the ‘Ambitious Card’ where a chosen card repeatedly rises to the top position in a deck of cards without any shuffling or cutting, or the ‘Sponge Balls’ where the balls move invisibly between the magician’s hands and those of the spectator’s. In fact, these routines are freely available if you care to look. Anyone can search the internet and buy books and DVDs on close-up magic, or even the props and standard routines. What really sets one close-up magician apart from another is how they present their magic. In fact, presentation is the key - it is what makes close-up magic entertaining. A really good, professional magician will be creative and present their magic in an original and entertaining way. Sometimes humorous, sometimes mysterious, sometimes just plain weird and freaky. The magic becomes a vehicle for the personality and ideas of the performer.

This is what makes close-up magic great entertainment. An interesting, strange and funny person demonstrates the impossible, weird and wonderful, right under your nose!

Tattooed mummies provide the earliest concrete evidence of tattoo, and these have been found in various parts of the world, from Nubia to Peru. Probably t he most ancient tattooed man is the "Iceman", a Bronze Age man uncovered after being frozen in a glacier on the Tyrolean Alps since 3000 B.C. A tattooed band of stripes was found on his lower back, a simple cross on the inside of his left knee and more stripes on his right ankle.

There are many examples of tattooing in ancient Egypt, the oldest found on the mummy of Egyptian priestess of the goddess Hathor at Thebes, Amunet, who lived approximately 4000 years ago, she was tattooed with parallel lines of dots. Because of her religious status, some archaeologists have speculated that her body art had spiritual or magical connotations. Others feel the designs were of sexual nature.

Some of the most diverse, ornate, and bizarre body art was found in the mysterious and complex world of Maya between 300 and 900 A.D. For Maya, body modification, whether temporary or permanent, were done for spiritual reasons as well as beautification. Full body tattoos or facial tattoos, were acquired by men and women.

When Captain James Cook set sail in his Endeavor in 1769, he visited many islands of Pacific Ocean, most of which included tattooing as part of their culture. It's Cook who gave us the "tattoo" word based on similar words in Polynesian cultures that were used to describe the practice.

On board the Endeavor was Sir Joseph Banks. Along with cataloging many types of animal and plant life, Banks documented the indigenous cultures at every stop along the way. Included in these notes are many references to tattooing. When Banks returned to England in 1771, he disembarked with a permanent memento of his voyage: the very fist tattoo on a modern Western man!

On December 8,1891, the first electric tattoo machine was registered by inventor Samuel O'Reilly, at the United States Patent Office. He began working out of a barber shop in New York City, calling his business a "tattoo parlor" - the first tattoo studio in the United States.

Soon tattoo parlors were springing up all over the country. During the First and Second World Wars, different branches of military adopted tattooing as a means of mystical protection, a souvenir or remembrance.

In the mid-1970s, tattooists began holding tattoo conventions. Tattoo artists from all over the countries gathered together as a group to talk shop and show off their work.

Due to the conventions, magazines, and other kinds of exposure, tattooing began to emerge as a form of fashion. People started to recognize its artistic merit and use it as a way to express personality and religious belief.

Charles Darwin, in The Descent of Man, observed that "Not one great country can be named, in which the aborigines do not tattoo themselves." Ancient and modern peoples have used tattoos as means to a seemingly infinite number of ends.

Today we are experiencing one of the biggest revivals ever. The combination of technology, historical awareness and artistic ability has taken tattoo to heights never before imaged.
