Thoughts on my dream - Become a star singer in China

By Jacklyn Chen
Something inspired me today that I decided to write things about me and my family whenever I feel like. I won't have any fancy English since I didn't speak any English till I came here at age 27.

My biggest dream: Get fame! Either in singing or acting.

Some people may keep such things in private and come out surprise everyone once they succeed. They get nothing to lose if nothing happened just because no one knows. But for me, it doesn't work this way. Among all the goals I've had in my life, I made them public a year or more ahead of time. All of them came true at the end. Buy speaking out about things that may never happen is to put pressue on myself so I'll do what I can to make it happen. It is especially important now since I'm married with 2 children (7 & 4). Leaving my family here for pursuing career in China is a huge step. I need a lot of pressue to step out and take action.

I've been wanting to be a singer or an actress for many years but never have I become so serious about really doing it as it is now.

I'm quite talented in language, music and art areas. I'm gifted with a golden voice. I learn things faster than average people. Plus I am especially good at imitating calligrapy, drawing, and various singing styles. I remember my works of Chinese calligraphies (in different fonts, pen, brush) were displayed in school even though I rarely (or never) practiced. I could sing Peking opera pretty well already when I was around 6. But guess what I ended up majoring? Chemistry! I really should've chosen a music school. I couldn't. Why? You may find it hard to believe: back to the old days, people felt that only those who were not good at science would choose liberal arts (and those students were considered 'stupid'). Smart kids would stay with science and that would be their future. I didn't want to be considered 'stupid', of couse, so I sticked with science. I made my family and my teachers very proud since I ranked #1 10 times and only 2 times as #2 out of all the term exams. I made them even happier by going to the University of Science of Technoloty of China (Chinese MIT) majoring chemistry.

You guessed it: I actually hate chemistry. In fact, I don't like science at all. I do not have that kind of genes! From head to toe, every single cell in my body is artistic and musical. Imagine how painful I felt during the 4 & a half years of working in chemistry in a heavily chemical factories poluted area that is 50km from Beijing city without any friends and family?

Anyway, down to the point - I plan to follow my dream in another year and will try my best to make it happen (or my heart is saying "I have to succeed").

To prepare for this, I've been pretty active lately participating all kinds of events or sing at Karaokes. I'm going to a singing class as well. I may need to take private lessens from time time whenever needed, or even go to an American teacher to get some advice on how to sing English songs.
