Presenting the revolutionary, one-inch thin MacBook Pro — now in widescreen 15-inch and 17-inch models.

Powered by Intel Core Duo
The Intel Core Duo chip inside MacBook Pro gives you the power of two processors wherever you go. Now it's a breeze to render complex 3D models, enjoy smooth playback of 1080p HD video, or host a four-way video conference.

Unmatched performance
The new engine is only part of the story. MacBook Pro features a 667MHz frontside bus and memory that runs faster than any previous Mac notebook. It features PCI Express, a Serial ATA hard drive, and the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 for superfast graphics performance. Add it all up and you get up to five times the speed of the PowerBook G4 in key performance benchmarks.

MacBook Pro performance
Up to five times faster than 17-inch PowerBook G4 with 1.67GHz PowerPC.

iSight built-in
A full-scale iSight camera at the top of your MacBook Pro's display means you're ready for video conferencing via iChat AV wherever you are — no cords or cameras to plug in or carry around.

MagSafe Power Adapter
Mobile users will love the new MagSafe Power Adapter featuring a magnetic DC plug that both ensures a tight connection and enables a clean break from the power port when there is undue tension. It prevents the MacBook Pro from being pulled off of a desk when the cord is accidentally tripped over, and it protects the power cord from wear and tear.

Have brighter ideas
Your eyes will light up when you see how the MacBook Pro's crisp, widescreen displays have lit up — they're up to 67% brighter than their predecessors. And the 1680-by-1050-pixel display on the 17-inch MacBook gives you as much workspace as a 20-inch Apple Cinema Display. Each MacBook Pro model can even connect to a gorgeous 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display.

It's showtime
If you need to present to a group, or you'd just like to watch your MacBook Pro from across the room, you've got everything you need. With Front Row and an Apple Remote, you can display photo portfolios, play music, or watch videos from up to 30 feet away. You can also use the Apple Remote to drive your Keynote presentations from just about anywhere in the room.

Make the connection
Despite the amazing 1-inch slim design, MacBook Pro offers a full complement of ports and connections.

Developed in consultation with pro photographers, Aperture 1.1 — available now for $299 and as a free Software Update for current owners of Aperture 1.0 — offers increased computer and camera compatibility. The first Universal version of Aperture, the upgrade allows photographers to run Aperture on both PowerPC-based and the new Intel-based Macintosh computers, including MacBook Pro.

In addition to enhanced compatibility, Aperture 1.1 also provides a variety of significant performance and feature enhancements. These include:

1. Improved RAW Image Quality
Aperture 1.1 provides new, improved RAW decode algorithms that deliver next-generation RAW image handling.

Thanks to the improved default rendering of RAW images from supported cameras, Aperture 1.1 yields significantly better image quality, results you’ll see in such areas as noise reduction, sharpening, and highlight recovery.

In short, RAW images have never looked better than they do in Aperture 1.1.

In order to maintain the image integrity of the existing photos in your Aperture library, Aperture 1.1 gives you the ability to retain the original 1.0 RAW decode. Or, if you prefer, you can selectively migrate images to the new 1.1 RAW decode.

2. RAW Fine Tuning
When you render images using RAW decode version 1.1, you’ll also gain access to an entirely new set of RAW Fine Tuning controls available in the Adjustments HUD allowing you to tweak decode settings. These include:

Boost, which lets you intensify or reduce image contrast

Sharpening, which lets you either dial in the amount of sharpening you’d prefer to see applied to images in the RAW decode process or turn off sharpening altogether

Chroma Blur, which lets you soften chroma noise by blurring color artifacts resulting from camera sensor noise

Using these fine tuning controls, you can tweak settings on an image-by-image basis, in effect creating a camera-based RAW decode profile on the fly. What’s more, Aperture 1.1 lets you save your customized decode adjustments as a camera default, so they can be easily applied to newly imported images.

3. Auto Noise Compensation
Designed specifically to deal with noisy images resulting from high ISO or long exposures, Aperture 1.1’s new Auto Noise Compensation option automatically applies the optimal settings for noise reduction to your image. A real time-saver, Auto Noise Compensation takes into account the unique noise characteristics of each camera and dials in the optimal settings to produce a high-quality result.

4. New Color Meter
Aperture 1.1 includes a built-in color meter you can use to sample the pixel values anywhere in an image and display them in RGB, LAB, or CMYK. Particularly useful when fine-tuning image exposure, color balance, and brightness parameters, you can use the color meter anywhere in Aperture — while editing, adjusting, arranging images on a Light Table, or laying out a book. In Aperture 1.1, you can display color values at any time in the Adjustments HUD or opt to display them right in the Loupe.

5. Enhanced Export Controls
In Aperture 1.1 the Export Versions command now includes a “Fit Within (Inches)” option and allows you to specify a resolution in dots-per-inch (dpi) for exported images, making it easier to output images at exactly the size you want. In addition, you can also specify the default dpi for images you’d like to open in an external editor. If, for example, you regularly open images for layering effects in Adobe Photoshop, you can now specify that Photoshop open them at 300 dpi (or another dpi of your choosing).

6. Dozens of Other Improvements
In addition to all of the above, Aperture 1.1 also offers dozens of additional reliability and performance improvements in such areas as image export, metadata handling, onscreen proofing, histogram, cropping, printing, web output, Query HUD, and others. You’ll find performance improvements particularly noticeable in keyword searching and when using the Lift & Stamp tool.

Finally, for those of you who use Aperture hand-in-hand with Photoshop, you’ll appreciate improved handling of layered Photoshop files. Aperture 1.1 now allows you to manage layered Photoshop files without having to needlessly create additional flattened versions.

If your computer network keeps expanding and the associated networking equipment costs keep increasing, you might want to consider buying equipment in the secondary market. This is a place where you can purchase used or unused brand name equipment; such as, servers, routers, LAN switches and more at substantial savings. Savings of 50-70% of list price are not unusual.

The secondary market for computer equipment was born in the early 1970s when the Federal Government forced IBM to sell equipment and not just rent it. Since that time it is estimated that the secondary market for equipment like computers and WAN and LAN equipment exceeds $20 billion. A few examples of the brands that are readily available on the secondary market are: IBM, Dell, Cisco Systems, Nortel and many more.

In a survey conducted by CIO magazine, which caters to IT executives, found that 77% of companies surveyed buy secondhand or used IT equipment. Surprisingly, the reasons why so many companies are purchasing used equipment go beyond just saving money. Here are some of the reasons that have been mentioned:

œ Maximize IT Equipment Investment You can save 50-70% on previously owned equipmentœ Convert Surplus Equipment into Cash You can sell your un-needed equipment or trade it in towards other equipmentœ Quick Delivery for Emergency Needs Dealers in the secondary market can typically provide equipment much faster than the manufacturerœ More Personalized Service Dealers, being smaller companies than the Manufacturer, are more flexible and responsiveœ More Services Available Secondary market dealers will offer services that the manufacturer may not offer, such as a short term rental program, trade-ins, an integrated solution with mixed vendors and initial set up servicesIf you are a newbie in purchasing equipment on the secondary market there are some very good questions you need to ask before buying from a dealer. Getting the right answers will make it a pleasant experience. Here are the questions you need to ask?œ How long has the dealer been in business? Try to deal with someone who has been around a good number of years and can provide referencesœ Is the equipment tested and how thoroughly? This is a must and a printout of test results is very desirableœ What is the warranty on the equipment? There should be a minimum of a 90 day warrantyœ If your require on site maintenance can they provide it? Can the dealer put this equipment on the manufacturerfs maintenance program or on a third party maintenance plan œ What is the companyfs return policy?œ Will this equipment look like new? Ask the dealer what they do to make the equipment look as close to new as possibleœ What kind of technical support is available? If you need, can you receive pre-sale and post-sale support if you need it. It is not unreasonable for a dealer to charge for applications support, though.

Manufacturers can sometimes be touchy about maintenance and software issues on previously owned equipment, so make sure all your concerns are dealt with in writing. If you get all the right answers to the above questions and deal with someone who has been in this business for a good many years your experience in the secondary market should be a pleasant one.

Malicious software, or malware, is likely the most widespread problem faced by computer users today. As a computer technician, I find that about three out of four jobs I do for home computer users are to remove malware in one form or another.

Malware programs come in several forms: Spyware and adware track your activities when surfing the Internet and bombard you with pop-up advertisements. Hijackers change browser start pages and redirect you to unwanted web sites. Viruses and trojans erase data and allow hackers to access your files. In many cases, the end result is that your computer becomes unusable and in need of repair.

Many computer users try to protect their computers by installing anti-virus and firewall programs. While these programs are of value, they alone are not sufficient to fix and prevent all types of attacks. Many computers with up-to-date anti-virus and firewall software arrive at my door infested with malware to the extent that they are unusable.

I have found user education to be the most effective deterrent to malware. Here is a list of things you can do to keep your computer healthy:

1. Be skeptical of free software
There are many free software programs available on the Internet. Unfortunately, many of these are bundled with malware designed to display pop-up ads or monitor your browsing activities. Some even go further by regularly downloading additional malware without notifying you.

Here are some common examples of free software that can contain malware:

Screen savers
AIM buddy icons
Desktop background pictures
Email “smileys”
Peer-to-Peer music-sharing services

Many troublesome adware programs are legal because they explain what they do in the license agreement, which the user typically must agree to before the program is installed. If you're not sure about a program, it pays to glance over the license agreement. You may be surprised what you are giving permission for.

You should also be skeptical of spyware removal tools and pop-up blocker programs. Believe it or not, many of these tools actually contain adware and spyware themselves. If you're not completely sure about a piece of software, ask a savvy computer user or technician before installing it.

There are some good freebies on the Internet, but there are many undesirable ones as well. To protect you computer, you must exercise discretion. Be very cautious about giving a web site permission to install software on your computer. A hacker with $20 and some spare time can construct a professional-looking web page that is designed to install malware on your computer. Some parents have found it necessary to forbid their children from downloading any software without permission.

2. Install critical Windows updates
Many malware programs have the ability to infect your computer only because of a mistake made by Microsoft during the development of Windows or Internet Explorer. When Microsoft learns of these mistakes, the company releases updates to fix them.

The well-known “Blaster” and “Sasser” worms infected millions of computers, all of which didn't have the latest Windows updates installed. These and other viruses could infect out-of-date computers without any action on the part of the user other than connecting to the Internet.

If your computer is using Windows XP, you can configure it to receive updates automatically. To find the automatic update option, click Start, RIGHT-click My Computer, click Properties, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.

If you are using an older version of Windows, or if you'd like to install the updates manually, visit windowsupdate.microsoft.com or click on Start > Windows Update (if you're using Windows XP, it will be found under Start > All Programs > Windows Update).

3. Don't open suspicious email attachments
One of the most common ways for viruses to spread is through the use of email attachments. Under usual circumstances, it is OK to read the text of an email that contains a virus. Your computer will not be infected unless you make the mistake of attempting to open the attachment. Although some viruses can infect even without the use of an attachment, this is normally not a problem if you keep your software up-to-date as described earlier in the article.

Most people follow a simple rule that they assume will protect them: They do not open any attachment unless they recognize the sender. However, knowing the sender does not make an attachment safe. In fact, many viruses appear to be sent by somebody you know. Every day people are infected with viruses because they open an attachment on an email that appeared to come from a family member or close friend. Before you open a file attached to an email, make sure BOTH of these statements are true:

1.You know the person who is sending the email.
2.The email contains a personal message that describes the attachment and makes it clear the message was written by the person it appears to be from. A one line message like “open this, it's cool!” is not enough because many viruses are designed to automatically generate such messages.

If the message is vague as to what the attachment is, email or call the sender to see if they intended to send it to you.

4. Consider using an alternative web browser
The computer program that you use to look at web pages on the Internet is called a web browser. Microsoft Internet Explorer is the web browser that comes packaged with Windows, and is therefore used by the vast majority of computer users. Contrary to many people's assumptions, there are a handful of other free Internet browsers that meet or even exceed the ease of use and features of Internet Explorer.

Many viruses and other malicious software infect computers by taking advantage of security vulnerabilities or “holes” in Internet Explorer. While vulnerabilities exist in other browsers, Internet Explorer is the one that is targeted most frequently by virus and malware authors. While keeping Internet Explorer up-to-date as described earlier in the article provides some protection, some security experts are recommending that users abandon Internet Explorer altogether.

One of the most promising alternative browsers is called Mozilla Firefox, which can be downloaded free from www.mozilla.org. Firefox has been quickly gaining popularity in the recent months. Firefox also automatically blocks advertising pop-ups triggered by the websites you visit. You'll want to keep whatever browser you use up-to-date, as security problems are discovered even in non-Microsoft browsers occasionally. Firefox automatically informs you of updates when they become available.

You've probably heard the news by now: Windows now works with Macs!

On Wednesday, Apple unveiled Boot Camp, public beta software that enables Intel-based Macs to run Windows XP.

Boot Camp is public software that is now in beta and only works with Intel-based machines. In addition, downloading Boot Camp is free.

As elegant as it gets
Boot Camp lets you install Windows XP without moving your Mac data, though you will need to bring your own copy to the table, as Apple Computer does not sell or support Microsoft Windows.(1) Boot Camp will burn a CD of all the required drivers for Windows so you don't have to scrounge around the Internet looking for them.

Run XP natively
Once you’ve completed Boot Camp, simply hold down the option key at startup to choose between Mac OS X and Windows. (That’s the “alt” key for you longtime Windows users.) After starting up, your Mac runs Windows completely natively. Simply restart to come back to Mac.

For more information on Boot Camp, visit http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

Many kinds of software are available, which make it possible to customize each copied CD or DVD. For manually operated copiers, software should be installed on the attached computer. But modern copiers have hard discs of their own, so software can be installed on that hard disc.

CD burning software is available to copy many CDs or DVDs at once. This software not only copies the file onto many CDs at once, but it also changes the format of the files such that it may be copied faster. Software is also available to zip the files while being copies and unzip them later. Software is designed to reduce the time required to burn CDs.

For music CDs, there is plenty of software available to convert audio files into Mp3, wav, wma, CD, etc. CD copiers use Mp3 encoders to convert audio files into Mp3s, which can be dumped within a small space on the CD. Most of these programs are compatible with all music players such as Windows Media Player, Real Player, DivX, Sonic Focus, etc. These programs can also reconvert downloaded Mp3 formats into normal CD format to be played back.

Similarly, there is software to convert DVD into VCD and vice-versa. Converting a VCD into a DVD not only changes the file extension, but it also enhances the video quality of the program.

Software enables the user to customize the CD that is copied. Each CD can be given a serial number. Other information such as date, title of the CD and the name of the author or the company can be fed into the CD. These graphics can be made to appear as beginning or end titles on the CD, or as subtitles when the CD is being played. It can also be inserted as a slide in between.

Much of the software is compatible with both CD-Rs and CD-RWs. Software also depends on the operating system of the computer. Windows based software is much different than Linux based ones.

How to create a mirror image of your hard drive

The computer that you use has a hard drive in it, which stores everything that you put on it, plus all the settings that you prefer. You can then imagine how difficult it would be if you were to lose all of your data and have to set everything back up again. That is why a full hard drive backup is the preferred method of data backup, because every last bit of data is stored and not even your daylight savings time preference will be forgotten. There are many ways to make a perfect mirror image of your hard drive, and some are better then others. Let’s talk about the various strategies and find out what will best suit you.
The first way to make a perfect copy of your hard drive, quickly and seamlessly, is to use good hard drive image software. A great example of this type of software is True Image from Acronis, which is complete imaging software that helps anyone make a perfect image of their hard drive and save it anywhere, even the hard drive if they want to. Of course there are also many other types of software on the market, and all are just as unique too. Just be sure to choose a good one, because if you don’t, it could end up being the biggest mistake you ever made on your computer.

If you are a little more technically inclined, and have some knowledge of installing computer parts, then you could always use the RAID method. RAID, which stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks, requires you to install another new hard drive and can be used to make a perfect mirror image of your current hard drive, which will always be up to date by the second. There are many different levels to RAID, but if you were using it for hard drive backup purposes, you would use level 1. Level one is called disk mirroring or duplexing, and this level will write data to both hard drives simultaneously, so when something happens to one there will always be the other one to fall back on.

The final way to make a copy of your hard drive is to backup everything individually yourself. This is of course the hardest and most time consuming strategy, but is preferred by some experts, because you can choose what to save. If you do use this method, you need to make sure you back up your registry files, system files and other important files and folders that you have. You might also want to save your entire software program folders, as they might contain important data related to the program that you want to definitely save. If you are using Windows XP, there is a backup utility that you can use for free, located in your “System tools” folder. Go there by clicking “Start” on your bottom toolbar, then go to “All Programs”, and then “Accessories”. You should now see a folder labeled “System tools” and once that is open, click on the “Backup” program.

Now that you have gotten some ideas on how to create a perfect backup of your hard drive, you should know where to save that backup. There is always the option to save your hard drive image backup on the hard drive itself, but most likely this will not work for everyone because of space limitations. Also, if the hard drive should be literally destroyed by a fire, tornado or some other act of nature, then the backup would be destroyed with it. That is why I recommend backups, especially hard drive images, be stored on a DVD-R, external hard drive or a device like a Zip drive. Then just be sure to backup once every week, or month, and store the backup in a secure location. Now you have a perfect copy of ALL of your data, and it is secure from this dangerous world.

When you have a computer error it can be very frustrating, especially if the error prevents software from running or your computer even starting. If you add the internet to the mix, your computer will get viruses, spyware, adware and other malicious software that will cause errors on your machine.
All errors can be fixed by the average person though; you just need to know what you are trying to remove and the right software to remove it. This can be a daunting task to someone not so tech savvy, so I will take you through the different threats that exist on the internet and your PC.

Spyware is perhaps one of the most dangerous types of PC infections to date. If a computer gets infected with spyware, a person could keep track of your every keystroke, email, website visit and other confidential conversations you might partake in. So if you do things like online banking, a person could use the spyware to find out all of your information and do what illegal acts they want to with it.

The next internet threat is adware and isn’t as dangerous as spyware, but can be very annoying. I despise any company or individual who develops adware because it is intrusive and no better then spam. Adware is advertisement software that usually attaches to free software that most people download. And even if you are connected to the internet or not adware can show advertisements. It will also do this even if the original download is not running. Adware ads come in many different forms, like pop-ups, URL redirection and many other things that anyone would find annoying.

Most people use Windows, if you don’t then you can skip this part. If you do, then you should know that Windows uses registry files and these registry files could be causing errors for you. When registry files have invalid entries this can cause error messages and crashes. Also if you remove orphaned references in your registry you can increase your PC’s performance and stability.

Viruses are the main reason people have computer errors, especially if you are connected to the internet. If the computer does not have any internet connection, then a virus could have only gotten on their by someone inserting data that has been infected by a malicious virus.

A Trojan virus is the most common type of virus and you should know how it works to avoid it. A Trojan virus hides in a program that appears as something you may think is safe, but hidden inside is usually something harmful, like a virus. Trojans are so common because you may download a game or even a picture thinking it is harmless, but once you run the file, the virus gets let loose.

If this is the first time you have ever tried to remove these errors from your computer, then you can expect to find a lot. That is why I recommend you get a good computer error removal program and use it at least once a month.

With this knowledge of all the different types of computer errors, you should be able properly diagnose what is causing the errors on your computer and fix it. Do not be discouraged if all errors aren’t fixed right away, as it could be all of the above. If you do have every type of error, then you would have to take removal steps for each type of error.

Spyware and adware is a big issue today and the problem is only going to get bigger over the next few years. To understand how to rid your computer of spyware you have to first understand why it is being created in the first place so why don’t we look at that.

Where did Spyware start?
Companies in the past created spyware as a service to their advertisers. What would happen is you would install an application that you thought was cute or useful like Bonzai buddy or Comet Cursors and you used this knowing that it was free. What you did not know was that these “free” programs in fact were tracking all of the websites that you were going to and then sending back the information to the company that created the application, this seemed to be bad but not many people were too concerned. After the companies got this information on your surfing habits then they would change the ads on web pages, this is adware, so that they were targeting topics that you had shown interest in, and of course those companies were picking up the advertising dollars for placing those ads on your computer.

Why Does Spyware still exist?
Now that you can see the basics of how spyware is created and why you can imagine how lucrative a business it is to create spyware. In fact the company that was Gator is now called Claria and made profits of $100 million last year. Since there is so much money to be made in the spyware business there are always a lot of new spyware being released. All of this spyware is probably really slowing down your computer and breaking your applications.

How did I get this Spyware stuff?
There are a lot of ways that a computer can get spyware and its cousin Adware. The most popular ways right now are still by installing programs that have the spyware embedded directly into it and is launched as soon as you install the program. Other ways to get spyware are from visiting webpages that drop Active X controls on your computer or run javascripts and even sometimes from objects placed within emails.

OK, How do I get rid of the stuff now that I have it?
Most of the time getting spyware and getting rid of spyware is not very difficult but it takes some work on the user’s part, that’s you! There are several programs out there that will get rid of the spyware and adware but the two that are most common are Spybot and AdAware both of these programs are free to download and free to use. I have used Spybot and Adaware for years now and I never use just one of the two, I always use both as they seem to each catch spyware and adware that the other does not.

What if These two free programs don't get rid of it all?
In the end you can not always rely on just one or two free programs but even just using these two free products will often make a big difference to speeding up and securing your computer. When you are ready you can look around and often find one or more great programs that will do it all in one place and do a better job at that.

Stunning visuals don't have to cost an arm and a leg with cheap graphics cards (aka video cards). Unless you are a hardcore gamer, you don't need to have the best of the best and a cheap graphics card will do you just fine. Now I'm not saying you should skimp on getting a good video card, but find one that fits your needs.

For example, a work computer should just have integrated graphics on the motherboard. Integrated graphics means that it's already built into the motherboard without having to get anything extra so it's perfect for workstations. On the other hand, a serious gamer needs to get a good video card that can handle anything a game can throw at it.

Heh, I'm guessing you aren't here because you need a cheap graphics card for your work computer. You are looking for a good video card, right? Well, you have two options: an expensive card could let you play all the games with all the settings on high or you could get a decent one that can handle games on the low or medium settings.

I'd probably go with the second option since you get more bang for your buck. Buying a top-of-the-line video card will run you over $400 while a decent one will be around $200. Now, if you need the best of the best, go for it, but you can get a cheap graphics card that is almost as good for half the price.

AGP vs. PCI Express? What's the difference? Well, the newer cards are coming out for PCI express slots because they are much faster than AGP. What does that mean? The bottom line is better performance so make sure to get a motherboard with PCI express slots that can handle the new video cards.

Now if you are on a budget and want to save some money or your motherboard doesn't have a PCI express slot, get an AGP. I will warn you that AGP video cards might be totally replaced so make sure to upgrade later.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot! Cheap graphics cards need to be upgraded much more often than other parts of the computer. Since so many games push the limit of what a computer can do(Halflife 2, Battlefield 2), video cards need to be made better and better.

So if you want to keep current in gaming, go to http://www.gaming-computers-authority.com/Computer-Discount-Deals.html and look out for a great deal on a sweet new video card in the future.
