2006 Kia Sedona midsize minivan/van preview

Lighter and more luxurious, the next-generation Sedona is bound to out-class its predecessor.
What We Know: Fold-flat third-row seats in a minivan are the equivalent of twin turbos in a sports car. You don't have to have them, but doing so goes a long way toward assuring a more prominent place among your peers. The first Sedona didn't have 'em, but it did have a respectable mix of features at an affordable price. The revamped 2006 Sedona still promises value, but it also has a new 3.8-liter V6, sizable interior and, of course, a set of fold-flat third-row seats. "The minivan segment is highly saturated, but with the right combination of features, safety and value we can compete with anything else on the market," said Yumi Katayama, product strategy manager for the Sedona. Longer than its predecessor, the '06 Sedona is more spacious inside, lighter and has more standard equipment. Every Sedona carries six airbags: two dual-stage units in the dash, two side seat airbags in front and two side curtain airbags that protect all three rows. Also standard are active headrests up front, antilock disc brakes and a tire-pressure monitoring system. If that's not enough safety for you, electronic stability control and traction control are on the options list as well. Kia didn't forget the basics either as the base Sedona LX comes standard with tri-zone climate control, power windows in the second row, cruise control, a CD player and keyless entry. Moving up to the EX gets you a power driver seat, upgraded stereo and power rear-quarter windows while options packages offer additional amenities like full leather seating, a power rear liftgate, rear parking assist, power-sliding doors, a sunroof, power-adjustable pedals and a rear-seat DVD player. With so many features packed on, Kia figured the Sedona could use a little extra power as well. Every Sedona will come with a 3.8-liter V6 rated to produce more than 240 horsepower. Combined with a five-speed automatic transmission, this all-new engine should give the Sedona enough power to keep up with any van in the segment.
